Special Tissues

Tissues that have completely lost the ability to divide are called as permanent tissues. Permanent tissues are of three types : Complex, Simple and Special permanent tissues.

Special Tissues:

Besides simple and complex tissues, plants also have special tissues whose function is secretion. These tissues secrete latex, gums, resins, oils, etc. Latex is a thick, sticky white fluid secreted by rubber, banyan, fig trees and garden plants like oleander (kaner in Hindi). Based on modifications these tissues can be divided into Two types :

  •  Laticiferous Tissue : This plant tissue have latex. They originated from meristematic tissue and mature with other tissues. The cells are elongated, thin walled and multinucleated.
  • Glandular TissueThey possess various glands, that secretes oils, resins, tannin, mucilage etc.
  • Citrus and rose plants secrete oils, while gums and resins are secreted by many coniferous trees.
